Sleep Issues Down Under

goo sleepThis past weekend saw a three-day conference, The Sleep and the City, Sleep Down Under 2011, which delved into sleep research, treatments and prevention of sleeping disorders in a bid to help Australians sleep better.

Experts discussed a variety of issues including how chronic snorers make worse long-distance drivers and how snoring appears to increase the blood pressure of children and pregnant women.

An article in the Telegraph.com.au wensite quotes a noted sleep research specialist:

Australian sleep specialist Dr Maree Barnes said getting a good night’s sleep was just as important as diet and exercise in a healthy lifestyle.

“We do know that inadequate sleep and sleep disorders cause major health problems,” Dr Barnes said.

The conference also presented information showing that sleep disorders during pregnancy may cause problems with the baby. A study, presented at the conference, showed half the women who were diagnosed with sleep apnea while pregnant had smaller babies at birth or showed evidence of slower growth in the third trimester of pregnancy.
